Freeform July: Letting My Locs Be

“This month, I’m not retwisting. I’m just resting.”

I can call this a Freeform July because this is the month where my locs will be free.

I've chosen not to manipulate, force, or control too much — not my hair, not my time, not even how things unfold. I’m in a freeform season, and it’s not just about my locs.

What Freeform Means to Me Now

“This is not a hairstyle. It’s a soft revolution.”

Freeform isn’t just a hair set — it’s a mindset.

It’s showing up without polishing everything. It’s trusting that I can still be beautiful, powerful, and enough, even when things aren’t tightly done.

And ideally, even in my life, that’s where I’m at. Yes, I’m letting my locs grow without a retwist — but deeper than that, I’m letting life grow on its own terms too.

The Rhythm of My Days

“Peace begins in the mirror.”

I start my mornings slowly. Freeform asks that of you — to slow down. No heavy planning. Just a light moment of stillness. Skincare. Mirror time. Earrings. Grounding yourself before heading out.

Because with freeform locs, you have to use your mirror — not just to check your hair, but to see yourself. To reconnect. To affirm that even undone, you’re still worthy of being seen.

Freeform comes with imperfection — beautiful imperfection.

My Current Loc Routine

“I give what I have, and it’s enough.”

Right now, my basic flow is gentle.

I’m using a hydration spray that I’ve mixed with a little oil and a touch of hairspray — that’s what I have, and it’s working. No extra products yet, but I plan to restock and share my choices when I do.

Finger separation is essential — but only when needed. No overdoing it. No guilt. Just being.

My Freeform Survival Kit

“My tools are soft. My strength is quiet.”
  • Soft wraps for those thick root days
  • Light oil mist — hydration is everything
  • Silver earrings when I need to feel her
  • Mirror check-ins each morning
  • Quiet journaling to track what my locs are teaching me

The Truth About Freeform

“Growth doesn’t ask for permission — it just comes.”

Freeform is beautiful — but it’s not always easy.

As the days go by, growth kicks in, and you still have to go to work, show up in public, and stay present in your social life. And when the new growth thickens, it becomes harder to manipulate your locs.

That’s when you realize: You’re not just existing in the freeform phase — you’re navigating it.

And that’s where creativity becomes essential.

As a loc girlie, woman, or mom — you’ll have those days where you look in the mirror and ask, "What can I do with my hair today?"

That’s okay. That’s real. That’s where discovery begins.

A Month to Be Creative

“This season will ask you to imagine new ways to be yourself.”

This Freeform July, I want to show you how to move with creativity and confidence.

I already feel it — this month is going to spark my creative side. I have so many ideas on how to style, manage, protect, and honor this phase — and I’ll be sharing them as we go.

This is also the phase where outsiders might say, “Locs are untidy.” This is the part people misunderstand. And this is exactly what we’re here to shift.

We said this blog is called Discovering Locs, right? So together, we will discover new ways of living through the freeform phase — without shame, without apology.

What This Season Is Teaching Me

“I don’t rush my roots. I let them rise.”

I may not know exactly what July will bring — or how August will look — but I do know this:

  • Freeform teaches patience
  • It demands softness
  • It calls for your full presence

And it’s already showing me that:

  • Softness is not laziness
  • Presence can exist even when I’m not performing
  • I don’t need a tight grip on my locs or my life to be at peace

πŸ’¬ Join Me

“My locs grow with me — not for show, but for soul.”

Right now, I’m here — head free — letting my locs grow on their own terms. Actually leaving my hair on freeform, and choosing to do the same with life.

If you’re in a Freeform season too — with your hair, your time, or even your heart — I see you. You’re not alone.

πŸ“ And be sure to check out the next blog, where I’ll go deeper into more sections of the freeform phase — including the benefits of freeforming, why I do it intentionally, and everything else this journey reveals along the way.

Because this isn’t just a one-time post. It’s a whole becoming. And you’re invited to walk it with me.
